Reserve Defence Forces: Army and Naval Service routes

The Reserve is a separate route from full-time General Service and officer cadetships. Start with the official Army Reserve or Naval Service Reserve information, then plan the application and the commitment you are considering.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Choose the Reserve route you mean

The Army Reserve is a part-time component whose volunteers undertake Defence Forces training in their spare time. The Naval Service Reserve has a maritime role and training that includes nautical and military skills. Read the branch information rather than assuming the two routes have identical activities.

The official Reserve careers page was accepting Army Reserve and Naval Service Reserve applications when checked on 18 October 2026. It states a standard entry range of 18 to not more than 39 at enlistment, with a separate provision for former members. Check your current competition terms and the applicable reference date before relying on an age summary.

Understand the published application stages

Use the application links reached from military.ie. The official joining guide says Reserve recruit entry does not require formal educational qualifications. It describes fitness assessment, interview, security clearance, medical examination and attestation, with instructions for the fitness questionnaire.

That overview does not establish a universal five-section aptitude requirement. Follow your actual terms and invitation. PSP does not sell a supposed Reserve test specification inferred from Army cadet familiarisation, or promise that one route’s practice covers every requirement.

Check the commitment before applying

Identify the branch and location you intend to apply to. Ask the official contact about current training arrangements, attendance expectations and the practical implications for work, study, travel and other responsibilities. Write down what is confirmed and what you still need to clarify.

For motivation and interview preparation, explain why this particular part-time route interests you. Use truthful examples of reliability, teamwork and responsibility. A generic statement about wanting a military career does not show that you have considered the specific Reserve commitment.

Prepare the tasks within your control

Keep the terms, contact details, correspondence and requested document list together. Read the fitness instructions and use appropriate qualified guidance for preparation. Keep medical questions for the official assessment process and relevant healthcare professionals.

PSP can help you organise an application checklist and practise explaining your own evidence. It cannot submit the application, confirm medical suitability or guarantee enlistment. The official invitation remains the authority for your next action, even when a general preparation guide or another candidate describes a different experience.

Questions about this stage

Is Reserve entry the same as an Army cadetship?

No. Reserve recruit entry and officer cadetship competitions are separate routes. Use the terms for the route you actually selected.

Does every Reserve applicant take the five familiarisation tests?

The official joining overview checked here does not establish that requirement. Follow your competition terms and personal invitation.
