Defence Forces application guide: start with your route

Choose the competition first, then build your checklist from its official terms. A recruit application, a cadetship and a specialist Air Corps route can require different qualifications and stages.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Use the official application route

The current competitions page is the starting point for an application. Official application forms are available while the relevant competition is open. A preparation account or payment does not submit an application or reserve a place.

Save the competition name, stream, closing date and terms. Use a reliable email address and accurate contact details. A missed invitation or an incorrect address can create a practical problem even when the rest of your preparation is sound.

Prepare evidence before it is requested

Make a personal list of identification, qualifications and other evidence named in the terms. For 2026 Army cadetships, the booklet specifies original educational evidence where applicable and an original long-form birth certificate for interview. The exact stage and required form matter.

Do not upload identity documents into a general PSP practice exercise. Keep them for the official process and follow its security instructions. If your qualification or exemption does not map neatly to the booklet, ask the recruitment contact rather than guessing eligibility.

Match preparation to the required stages

Cadet applicants should plan for reasoning, physical assessment, group work and interview, with further conditions described in their booklet. General Service applicants should lead with the stages in their invitation; current official pages differ about aptitude testing.

Build an interview evidence bank while organising documents. Keep genuine examples of decisions, cooperation, responsibility and learning. Read the official fitness standards and use qualified help to prepare appropriately. Medical and vetting decisions are separate from a practice result.

Track progress without inventing a timeline

Record what you submitted, when you received correspondence and your next action. The official application FAQ says induction timing varies by applicant and competition, including scheduling and external checks.

If something seems missing, check your email folders and the exact submission details, then use the official contact route. Another candidate receiving an invitation earlier does not establish that your application has failed.

Questions about this stage

Can PSP submit my application?

No. Apply through the official competition page. PSP supports preparation.

Does an open General Service competition mean cadetships are open?

No. They are distinct routes with their own recruitment status and terms.

These guides explain the preparation process. Check your current competition booklet and invitation before relying on a requirement or date.
