Defence Forces medical assessment: what to prepare

Medical suitability is assessed through the official recruitment process. Use the criteria for your route, organise the requested information and obtain individual advice where needed.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Separate medical review from fitness practice

A run time or exercise count does not establish medical suitability. The competition terms describe medical conditions separately from the physical fitness assessment. The official medical process may involve detailed checks that a practice account cannot reproduce.

Read the medical annex and invitation for your exact competition. Army, Naval and pilot requirements should not be treated as interchangeable. Aviation selection in particular has route-specific conditions.

Check eyesight against the right source

The Army cadetship booklet includes detailed eyesight and corrective surgery provisions. Their application depends on the precise condition and history, so a short summary or online calculator would be an unsafe basis for an eligibility decision.

If you have a question about a prescription, previous surgery or another eye condition, read the relevant annex and ask the official medical or recruitment contact what evidence is needed. Obtain appropriate professional advice. PSP does not recommend a procedure to qualify or predict whether it will be accepted.

Prepare accurate information

Follow the request for forms, records or further evidence. Keep your account of medical history accurate and complete. If something in the instructions is unclear, seek clarification rather than omitting it or changing the description to fit an assumed answer.

Keep sensitive medical information for the official process and your healthcare professionals. You do not need to include diagnoses, records or identity numbers in a general PSP interview or aptitude answer.

What happens after a query

A request for further information should be handled through the official channel. Follow any stated deadline or review procedure. Another applicant’s account of being accepted or rejected does not determine your case.

The 2026 conditions are evidence for that competition. A future campaign may publish different terms. PSP can explain the preparation task and link the source, but cannot issue a medical clearance, waiver or binding eligibility verdict.

Questions about this stage

Can PSP tell me whether my eyesight is acceptable?

No. Use the exact current medical criteria and official assessment process, with professional advice about your individual circumstances.

Does passing the run mean I have passed the medical?

No. Physical assessment and medical suitability are separate requirements.
