Keep calculation and comparison separate
Work out the first expression, retain its result, then solve the second expression. Finally decide whether the first is larger, the second is larger or the values are equal. The equality option matters: a difference in the appearance of two calculations does not imply different results.
Use the operation rules stated or implied by the notation. If ordinary order of operations applies, multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction unless brackets change the order. During practice, explain that step rather than relying on a familiar-looking answer.
An original worked example
First calculation: 7 × 6 − 5. Multiplication gives 42, then subtracting 5 gives 37. Retain 37. Second calculation: 8 × 5 − 3. Multiplication gives 40, then subtracting 3 also gives 37. The correct comparison is equal.
Selecting the first because 42 is greater than 40 ignores the final subtraction in both expressions. Selecting the second because it begins with 8 compares the written numbers rather than the completed results. Feedback should show both paths and the final comparison so you can identify exactly where your reasoning changed.
Use a stable recall method
Retain the completed first answer rather than every symbol in the first expression. If you continue rehearsing the calculation while solving the second, you may create unnecessary memory work. Once the first result is secure, give the second calculation your attention.
If you miss the item, decide whether the cause was arithmetic, operation order, losing the first result or selecting the wrong comparison. Those need different practice. An equality mistake should prompt you to complete both calculations carefully, not assume that the question must favour one side.
Move from coached work to fresh timed practice
Start with accurate solutions and review each intermediate step. Then use new items under a disclosed PSP practice timer. A fast result on a remembered calculation pair tells you less than a careful result on a new one. Revisit mistakes deliberately and keep those reviews distinct from fresh attempts.
PSP timings do not state the official assessment duration. Your invitation also controls calculator or other aid rules. Do not infer permission from what was convenient in a coached exercise. Any harder PSP arithmetic extension is additional skill practice, not a claim about the live item bank.
Questions about this stage
Can the two calculations have the same answer?
Yes. Complete both calculations and select equality when their values match.
Is this the same as the civil service numerical test?
No. This format uses separately presented calculations and comparison. Civil service data-table practice can involve different skills and instructions.
