Independent Irish Defence Forces preparation

Air Corps preparation: recruit, apprentice or pilot

Air Corps General Service, apprenticeships and pilot cadetships are separate routes. Start by naming your exact competition before choosing preparation.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Keep the routes separate

General Service recruitment information describes the recruit application. Apprentice and pilot selection can involve different educational and assessment requirements. A page about joining the Air Corps cannot supply one accurate test specification for all three.

For pilot applicants, the 2026 booklet sets out psychometric and aviation assessment, psychomotor and cognitive work, simulator assessment, psychological interview and final competency interview. The booklet says previous simulator experience is not required. That does not mean the simulator stage can be replaced by general aptitude drills.

What shared reasoning practice can help with

PSP practice focuses on original exercises in the five familiarisation skill areas. It can help you work on attention, rule retention, calculation comparisons and logical relationships. The practice explanation should make the method visible so you can apply it to a new problem.

This is not a complete pilot simulator, aviation or psychological assessment course. Follow the official pilot familiarisation material for those stages and do not infer their full content from another applicant reporting that a test felt different.

Prepare a route-specific evidence bank

Pilot interview preparation needs to reflect the competencies published for that route, including maturity and technical aptitude. General Service candidates should use their own invitation. In either case, gather genuine examples from education, work, responsibilities, sport or volunteering.

The 2026 pilot competition has closed. The next opening date was unconfirmed when checked. Use the current recruitment page and the next published terms for a new application, especially for mathematics, age and aviation medical requirements.

Questions about this stage

Does the PSP diagnostic cover the whole pilot assessment?

No. It is reasoning practice and does not cover the full specialist pilot selection process.

Must I pay for simulator training to apply?

The 2026 official pilot booklet states that previous simulator experience is not required. Check the terms for your own campaign.
