Plan a useful Army mock interview

A mock interview is useful when it reveals something you can change. Choose questions from the right route, answer from genuine experience and review evidence rather than trying to predict a board’s score.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Set up a focused session

Choose a small set of competency and motivation questions appropriate to your invitation. For an Army cadetship, use the published areas in the booklet. Keep pilot and General Service requirements separate.

Decide who will ask the follow-up questions and how you will capture learning. Written notes can be enough. If you choose to record yourself privately, consider what personal information the answer contains and where the recording is kept.

Answer before looking at a model

Use your own example and finish the answer before reviewing advice. This reveals whether you can give the context, personal action, result and reflection without prompts.

Ask follow-ups that test the reasoning: why that action, what information you used, who disagreed and what you would change. A memorised opening may sound smooth while leaving those questions unanswered.

Use a transparent feedback checklist

Review whether the question was answered, the experience was relevant, your contribution was clear and the result was supported. Check whether you explained a decision rather than merely listed actions. Finally, look for honest reflection.

Feedback should describe what was present and what was missing. It should not invent facts about the candidate, infer an official mark or label a person unsuitable from one practice answer.

Make a second attempt with a specific change

Choose the most useful revision: shorten background, add the reason for a decision, explain what you personally did or make the learning concrete. Try again using the same truthful history.

The goal is a clearer account, not an increasingly fictional success story. If the example cannot answer the question, select a better real experience. PSP preparation and any practice rubric remain separate from the official interview process.

Questions about this stage

Does a mock result predict the official outcome?

No. It can identify preparation needs, but does not reproduce the board’s assessment or guarantee selection.

Should I practise only the questions I answer well?

Include follow-ups and weaker evidence areas. Those reveal the next useful improvement.

These guides explain the preparation process. Check your current competition booklet and invitation before relying on a requirement or date.

Official decisions, eligibility, medical clearance and assessment results belong to the recruiting organisation. A PSP practice score is not an official pass mark or selection prediction.
