Army cadetship interview preparation

Cadetship interview preparation should show how you think, act and take responsibility. Use the published competency areas to organise genuine examples, then practise explaining them under follow-up questioning.

Save your work in your PSP account. Applications are submitted through the official Defence Forces website.

Use the eight published areas

The 2026 Army booklet lists planning and organising; decisions and problem solving; working with others; communication; leadership and supervising; motivation and discipline; resilience; and information handling. Read the descriptions rather than relying on the labels alone.

A leadership example should show responsibility for others, coordination or delegation where that genuinely happened. An information-handling example should make clear how you identified relevant material. One story may support several areas, but the emphasis must answer the actual question.

Show judgement rather than an ideal persona

Choose a situation with a real demand. Explain what mattered, which options you considered and why you acted. If another person disagreed, show how you listened and decided without pretending there was no tension.

Officer-route preparation does not require inventing a military command scenario. School, work, sport and volunteering can contain relevant decisions. Be precise about your role and the authority you actually had.

Prepare for challenge and reflection

For each example, prepare follow-ups: what information was missing, what you delegated, how you checked progress, what went wrong and what you would do differently. A polished opening is not enough if the reasoning behind it is unclear.

Do not make every outcome perfect. Acknowledging a mistake and explaining a specific change can demonstrate learning more clearly than claiming you always stayed calm or everyone agreed with you.

Keep the route and official process visible

The booklet states that failing an assessed competency means being unsuccessful at interview. PSP does not know or reproduce the board’s undisclosed marks, so practice feedback should identify evidence quality rather than issue a supposed official score.

The personality questionnaire and earlier assessment activities are separate parts of the 2026 process. Follow the invitation for preparation, attendance and documents. Requests for official interview feedback have a stated time limit; preserve the result correspondence so you can follow that process if needed.

Questions about this stage

Can a school example demonstrate leadership?

Yes, if it truthfully shows relevant responsibility and action. Explain the scale accurately rather than inflating it.

Does PSP use the official interview scoring system?

No. Practice feedback is independent and does not claim to reproduce confidential board scoring.
