AO Assessment Preparation: A Practical Study Plan
Plan your Administrative Officer test preparation, review mistakes and practise under time pressure. Includes a study routine and free AO questions.
Your next AO practice session should leave you knowing what to do differently. A score alone cannot tell you whether you misread a condition, used the wrong denominator or rushed an otherwise straightforward question.
Start with a short free six-point AO practice sample. Rate each action before opening the explanation. Then use the routine below to turn the feedback into a useful preparation plan.
Start with your own assessment instructions
For AO Specialist 2026, the candidate booklet gives provisional Stage 1 dates of 5 to 10 November 2026. Your invitation confirms your assessment window and instructions. The AO campaign page links to the official vacancy and booklet.
Open your familiarisation material before choosing what to practise. Write down the subjects, response method, time limits and rules about equipment. Check whether you can return to questions and what happens when the time expires. Use those instructions during your final rehearsals.
Publicjobs specifically advises candidates to read the familiarisation material they receive. Its official test advice is a useful companion to your competition documents.

Find the mistake that costs you most
Try a small set without rushing. For each wrong answer, record one concrete cause:
| What happened | What to practise next |
|---|---|
| You found the right figures but divided by the wrong one | Write the denominator in words before calculating |
| You treated an assumption as a fact | Underline the sentence that supports your answer |
| You chose a judgement response because it sounded decisive | Check its authority, evidence and consequences |
| You knew the method but ran out of time | Repeat a short timed set after you can explain the method |
Keep the note short enough to use. “Careless” is too vague. “Read thousands as individual euro” gives you a check to apply to the next table.
A focused 40-minute session
This is a study routine, not an official test duration.
- Five minutes: revisit one mistake from your last session. Explain the correct method without reading the answer.
- Fifteen minutes: answer a short set in the subject you need to improve. Work untimed if the method is still unfamiliar.
- Fifteen minutes: read the full explanations, including questions you guessed correctly. Recalculate or identify the passage evidence yourself.
- Five minutes: record your next focus and choose the next session.
If you have several days, rotate subjects around your actual assessment requirements. If the test is tomorrow, use a smaller set and spend more time understanding it. A large volume of hurried answers can hide the same recurring error.
Move to timing when the method is clear
Timed practice adds a different problem: deciding how to use limited attention. Begin it after you can solve the same kind of question accurately without a clock.
Use the navigation and skipping rules in your own familiarisation guide. Do not build a strategy around returning to difficult questions unless your assessment allows that. After practice, separate unanswered questions from attempted-but-wrong answers. The first may point to pacing; the second needs closer diagnosis.
PSP’s lead AO judgement practice uses a six-point scale. In the 10-scenario, 50-minute mock, rate five actions per scenario independently. Ratings may repeat. Your answers save as you work and feedback follows submission. These are PSP practice settings, not confirmed vacancy 9005 specifications.
The main bank contains 60 rating scenarios, 90 verbal questions and 120 numerical questions. Eight secondary sample-format papers add 280 items: three numerical papers of 36 questions, two verbal papers of 59 statements and three single-choice job-simulation papers of 18 scenarios. These alternative-format papers use a 30-minute practice timer or an untimed option. Together the catalogue contains 550 items. The publicly linked self-assessment behind the secondary formats does not confirm the live competition format. Follow your invitation.

Before assessment day
Check the invitation for your exact deadline, permitted equipment, identification and any technical requirements. Test your setup using the official instructions. Resolve access or accommodation queries through the contact given in your invitation as early as you can.
Keep your preparation notes focused on methods: units, denominators, evidence and consequences. Avoid trying to memorise the answers to practice questions. The point is to recognise what a new question requires.
Choose your next session
- Work through AO numerical examples for percentage change, weighted averages and decisions under a budget.
- Read the AO verbal and judgement guide for evidence-based reading and choosing between workplace actions.
- Try free six-point AO questions and read the worked feedback.
